Ulster A entertain Cornish Pirates in the British and Irish Cup Pool match this afternoon at Shaws Bridge. Kick off 5:00pm.

Both teams are tied at the top of Pool 5 having won three from four, the Pirates take top spot by virtue of their superior points difference of 46 points compared to Ulster A’s 9 points.

Ulster A have it in their own hands to win the Pool  but to make sure they will have to record a win in this one and the next match, away to Scarlets PS, as the Pirates are likely to beat Hartpury in their last game.

The last time these teams met, back in October, the Pirates recorded a 23 – 14 win with the Pirates denying Ulster a losing bonus with the last kick of the game. How that match will reflect on this one for, as is customary at this level, there are substantial changes to both team.

The Pirates travel with only five starting players from when these teams last met, there are another two who were involved on the bench. however they are likely to bring a big pack and will look to take Ulster on up front.

Ulster have announced nine starting players and one replacement who were involved last time round. The back line sees Rob Lyttle and Aaron Cairns come in for Craig Gilroy and David Busby respectively so it’s still a strong enough back line.

Up front Tommy O’Hagan, John Andrew, Pete Browne, Matthew Agnew and Marcus Rea come into the starting line up to give a strong front five and mobile back row.

It should be enough for Ulster to win this one in a match where I expect them to blunt the impact of the Cornish forwards and look to spin the ball at every opportunity. Hopefully it will work out!
