Ulster suffered their largest defeat in European Rugby yesterday afternoon, conceding eight tries in their 60 – 22 defeat by Toulon at Stade Mayol.

On the face of it and, I suppose, in reality, it was quite a hammering but, given the circumstances, Ulster can take some comfort from the drubbing in that, despite being outclassed in most aspects of the game, they did manage to secure a try bonus of their own.

The Province’s tries came from Paddy Jackson, Mike McComish (2) and Jared Payne with Ruan Pienaar converting one.

I hadn’t expected much from this game and, apart from injuries to Jackson, Ludik and Olding, I’d say that the young and inexperienced Ulster side got a fair few positives out of their exposure to the cream of European Rugby.

The match looked as though it was going to be decidedly one sided as the hosts raced to a 10 – 0 lead in 9 minutes with Ulster’s defence sliced wide open on the second minute for Sancehez to . . .
