Ulster U20′s finished of their Inter Provincial series with a spirited win against Connacht U20′s at the Showgrounds on Friday afternoon.
Despite missing Dave McGuigan, Stuart McIlwaine, Iain Henderson and Craig Gilroy it was Ulster that were able to apply the early pressure with Chris Leatham opening the scoring on 16 minutes. Patrick Jackson converted, bringing the score to 0 – 7.
Connacht hit back with a penalth from Callum Boland following a David Whan yellow card on 23 min. Boland and Jackson swapped penalties and with Blane McIlroy binned just before half time Boland brought Connacht to within a point with his third penalty of the afternoon. Half time score 9 – 10.
Connacht’s Dave Butler was sent to the sin-bin just after half time and shortly after his return Ulster’s Patrick Jackson intercepted on the half-way and ran clear to score under the posts, the talented outhalf added the extras.
Connacht replied with another penalty but a Conor Carey break put the hard working Andy Warwick in for a try. Jackson converted taking the score 12 – 24.
The Westies finally crossed the line in the closing minutes with a Tadhg Leader try which was converted to bring the final score to 19 – 24.
