Cooke got their AIL campaign off to a winning start with a hard won 3 -10 victory in Dublin against a strong St Marys side.
The Belfast side were up for this game, exploding onto the park to kick off the new season and they settled into a pattern which saw them make ground, recycle the ball and maintain possession.
However it was St Mary’s who were to score first when Niamh Fitzgerald converted a penalty chance. This was to be the only score in the opening half with the game turning round 3 – 0 to the hosts.
Cooke continued to grind down their opponents and got some reward, following a strong passage of play, with a penalty converted by Lucy Fegan to bring the score to 3 – 3.
Cooke finally took the lead with a debut try from Grave Davitt which was converted by Fegan taking the final score to St Marys 3 Cooke 10. A well deserved win for the Belfast girls.
Cooke’s Gillian McAlister stated,
”The hard work in training has paid off for the girls, and they held a strong line of discipline for the whole game”.
Cooke Ladies next match is against U.L. Bohemians on Sunday 26th September at Shaws Bridge. KO 13:00
