St Marys, Dublin won the inaugural Ulster Women’s 7′s Tournament at Belfast Harlequins on Sunday afternoon in a hard fought final against Canadian visitors United Rugby.
Earlier in the afternoon Enniskillen defeated Ballymoney in the Shield Final and Cooke defeated “Surprise Team of the Tournament” Carrickfergus in the Plate Final in an entertaining day of Women’s 7′s at Deramore Park.
The local sides faced stiff competition with the flamboyant Canadians and the courageous St Mary’s who lost four players to injury throughout the tournament in some exceptionally hard matches. However special mention must go to the players of Carrick and Ballymoney who formed a new club Carrimoney so frequent was the player swapping between the teams.
The final was a fitting tribute to a great day’s entertainment with a patched together St Marys just proving too strong for the Canadians. Special mention to Suzanne of St Marys who battled for the line for the deciding try and justly picked up the Player of the tournament award.
