It was only fitting that our first All Ireland hockey match should feature Pegasus who entertained Pembroke Wanderers from Sandymount, Dublin at the Dub late on Saturday afternoon.
I arrived about 10 minutes late for this one and decided to take advantage of the low sun to give some backlighting for the Pegasus attack as they pressed the Pembroke defence late in the first quarter.
Pembroke held firm and the quarter ended with the score at 0 – 0. The visitors came into the game more in the second quarter and they were able to capitalise on their possession with a goal from Rachel O’Brien just short of the half hour mark to take a 0 – 1 lead into the second half.
