Schools Cup: Foyle College 0 Dromore High17

Dromore High came out on top 0 – 17 in a tough match, for both sides, played in torrential rain on Friday night at City of Derry Rugby Club.

A starting temperature of 3 degrees and an ever strengthening wind didn’t help in this bruising affair, but it was the country boys from Dromore that coped best with the conditions.

The visitors first score came off the back of a line out with a clever cut back allowing Aaron Lyttle to cross in the corner for an unconverted try.

The athletic got the second following a break on the half way and some strong running to score under the posts. added the extras to give Dromore a 0 – 12 lead.

At this point it looked as though Dromore were going to run away with the game but Foyle dug deep and, although under severe pressure, they didn’t concede any more points is the first half.

The second half was a close affair, much of the match played in the centre of the park, the only score of the half coming from Dromore fullback . The ball was passed out the line to Beacom-Hurle on the right wing, who slipped the close attention of the Foyle defence to sprint in from the 22 to score in the corner. Conversion was missed.

The closing stages of the game were marred by flared tempers on both sides, which the referee dealt with strongly and promptly. Probably brought on by the cold, driving rain.

An entertaining enough match, played on a soft pitch, in absolutely atrocious conditions.
