AIL W2: Queens University 5 Cooke 10

I must say it was a pleasure to catch up with Queens and Cooke this afternoon at the DUB in this AIL 2N decider.

Both Queens and Cooke have swept all before them in the league this season, to such an extent that progression to the promotion play offs was to be effectively decided by the aggregate score over their two league meetings.

Queens won the first game 12 – 14 at Shaws Bridge but a 5 – 10 reversal by Cooke in this game appears to have put them through to the play off.

Unsurprisingly with, in reality, only two competitive fixtures this season the game was far from a classic with little continuity from either side. Cooke’s pack dominated things up front and Queen’s back row did well to keep them in the game with several timely turnovers.

Cooke’s all international midfield of , and made the difference with Davitt calling the shots and Downey and then Davis both crossing for the decisive scores.

Queens hit back in the last ten minutes with a try from FRU Favourite  to give a tense finish but despite the students best efforts Cooke were able to hold on for their deserved win.
