Wheelchair Rugby: Six Nations Championship Day 1.

Wheelchair-Rugby

The results are in from Day 1 of the inaugural Wheelchair Rugby Six Nations and it’s been a spectacular start for Ireland who now sit top of the table after a remarkable 60 – 0 win against Wales.

Earlier in the day France defeated Italy 23- 18 in a bruising encounter and England edged out Scotland 14 – 0 in the final match of the day, leaving Ireland in top spot, on points scored, at the end of Day 1.

Ireland overcame Wales thanks to their physical defence and superior speed. The Irish line outs were sound and they just about shaded the scrums but it was the dominance of the pack in open play that lay down the foundations of this victory.

Even as the score built up Ireland continued to put in a supreme effort in defence and they will be particularly pleased that they kept their line intact, putting down a big marker for the rest of the tournament.

Ireland emptied their bench, on a rotational basis, throughout the 80 minutes, with all members contributing strongly but special mention must go to kicker , wing , who bagged four tries, and scrum half , who was a thorn in the Welsh side all match.

It was a remarkable achievement for the Irish side, in their first ever match together, given that they didn’t arrive at their hotel until 7:30am this morning, and it’s certainly a performance that the team can build on tomorrow when they travel the short distance to Montlucon to play Italy. (Match kicks off tomorrow at 19:00 local time, 18:00 UK/IRE.)
