Schools Senior: Larne Grammar 42 Carrickfergus Grammar 0 Friendly

A dull morning in Larne, saw Large Grammar take on Carrick Grammar in a friendly.

Larne started brightly and soon went over for the first score with only 5 minutes on the clock when touched down. The conversion was duly despatched by Larne’s number 9, . 7 – 0

The game then settled down, with both teams putting a few phases together, but it was another 25 minutes before the points tally was added to when Martlew went over for his second try, which was again converted by Wynn to give the hosts a 14-0 lead.

Carrick came close to the LGS line a couple of times, but a resolute defence kept them out.

A strong run (one of several) by was stopped 3 metres short by the Carrick defence, but following up, took possession and, despite the attentions of 3 Carrick players, couldn’t be stopped as he went over for Larne’s 3rd try before half time. The ever-accurate Wynn slotting another conversion between the posts for a 21-0 halftime lead for Larne.

Immediately after the break Larne were on the front foot again with going over for Larne’s 4th try, Wynn adding the extras to give Larne a 28-0 lead.

Carrick came close but were unable to get over the line.

With the game all but over, Carrick continued to battle, and some 5 minutes later came very close to getting on the scoresheet, but solid LGS defending kept them out.

With most of the play now in the Carrick half, it was only as matter of time before Larne scored again, with Ferguson claiming his second, and with the conversion added, Larne stretched their impressive lead to 35-0.

With only a minute remaining on the clock, Larne still continued to press, and rounded off the try-scoring in the corner. The most challenging kick of the day to follow, far out on the touchline for Wynn, but a fantastic 100% kicking display was rounded off with the additional 2 points, and Larne ran away 42-0 winners.
