RWC Warm Up: Ireland 29 Italy 10

Despite going behind twice in the opening half hour Ireland’s “hopefuls” found their composure to pull away for a 29 – 10 against Italy in Ireland’s first warm up match in their preparations for the 2019 World Cup.

Unfortunately, for a few of the starters, a scrappy first half may have ended their hopes of a ticket to Japan.

Although there are two more warm up games to come this game could have been the last chance saloon for a few players with Schmid expected to look at starting line ups in the next two games.

An unconvincing first half from Ireland saw Italy take an early lead as Maxime Mbanda found the line off the back of a maul for an unconverted try.

Ireland responded through Joey Carberry who was sent over following good hands from , Carberry’s converted his own score to give Ireland a 2 point lead.

However, Italy were back in front by the end of the first quarter as Carlo Canna collected Guilio Bisegni’s toe poke to put Italy ahead 7 – 10.

Carberry stepped up on the half hour mark for his second conversion, again after good work by Farrell who’s bustling run created space for Dave Kearney to cross out wide.

Andrew Conway crossed in the opposite corner just before the break, this one unconverted, to see Ireland take a 19 – 10 lead into the break.

Ireland’s preparations suffered a set back with Carbery carted off ten minutes after the restart but by that stage Jordi Murphy had settled Ireland’s nerves with a try on the 45th minute.

The game sort of petered out after Carberry’s injury, replacement looked unfazed but somewhat undercooked as he guided Ireland home.

Replacement Kieran Marmion added the final score, following up on his own charge down to score under the posts, the conversion inexplicably missed!

Don’t know how much Schmid would have got out of this but Farrell and Conway probably did their chances no harm.
