On Wednesday evening Stormont was the neutral venue, under lights, for the Senior Schoolgirl Hockey Final between Portadown College and The Royal School Armagh. It was a cold night, made even colder by a bitingly cold wind, which blew into Portadown faces during the 1st half. Both sides had brought large contingents of very vocal supporters, complete with accompanying drums and trumpets!
It was a very cagey start from both sides. Through balls were cut out and passes went astray. Both defences shut down attacks high up the pitch. Portadown were the 1st team to show some territorial domination and created chances. Halftime was reached scoreless, but Portadown looked the side most likely to score.
In the 3rd quarter, Armagh slowly but surely turned the screw. Passes stuck, the Portadown defence was put under pressure and penalty corners won.
