We caught up with our friends at Neillsbrook Park on Saturday afternoon as Randalstown entertained Lisburn in a Championship 2 match.

The match kicked off in perfect conditions but we didn’t see much action at the road end in the first quarter as Lisburn kept Randalstown pinned in their own half. Unfortunately, for the “big city” side they were unable to make their possession count and a break by ‘Town at the start of the third quarter was finished off in some style by left win David McWhirter. Ryan Wilson added the extras to give Randalstown a 7 – 0 lead at the break.

An unconverted try by Randalstown’s Cormac Devlin at the start of the second half pushed the score along to 12 – 0 and when 2 Lisburn players were yellow-carded it looked like game over for the visitors.

However, Lisburn remained competitive throughout and, in a keenly contested game, when a Lisburn player was sent for a 10 minute break the teams swapped scores with McWirter crossing for his second before a barging run from Lisburn’s Ollie James ended with him stretching for the try line. Lisburn’s try was converted by Josh Patterson and there was plenty still to play for with the score reading 19 – 7 in Randalstown’s favour.

Lisburn went looking for a losing bonus point in the remaining 10 minutes but they were caught out with a break from Randalstown’s No 7 Johnny Fulton who crossed for a try bonus for the home side late in the game. Wilson added the conversion to give a final score pf 24 – 7 in Randalstown’s favour, Lisburn unlucky not to get anything out of the game.
