Our photographer Richard Owens was there to capture the action.

It was all Carrick for the first 15 minutes but new coach Ross Todd’s team defended this early onslaught and it was his squad that put the first points on the scoreboard.

An infringement from Carrick gave CI a penalty and their forwards burst up field recycling ball to get a try scored by prop on the 17th minute. Conversion by was added. 7 – 0

CI see off Carrick at Belmont for a win in Championship 1 on Saturday afternoon.

From the restart CI fumble and Carrick hurry the ball wide to their lock who dummies the drifting CI defence cutting back inside and forcing his way over the try line. The conversion is missed. 7 – 5 after 20 minutes.

The first yellow card of the afternoon is shown to CI flanker towards the half hour mark and Carrick use the numerical advantage to eventually find a space to get to the CI try line on 38 minutes through their pacy right wing who offloads to his supporting full back who dots down for their second try. Conversion is again sent wide and the half ends 7 – 10 in Carrick’s favour.

What words of wisdom were spoken in the team huddle at half time remains unknown but CI come out of the blocks at full tilt from the restart. Within a few phases they are 5m out from the Carrick try line and after a superb finger tip pickup from flanker Dowle he’s over for the home teams second try. Out half is now on kicking duty after losing their goal kicker to an injury but he comfortably slots the ball over to take his team back into the lead 14 – 10.

CI now are in full flow and score again through their left wing who comes into the centre and bursts through a tackle to score under the posts. is now kicking and quickly adds the conversion. 21-10.

Carrick regroup and the pressure tells as they have an attacking scrum in good field position. Two phases later replacement Carrick prop prop Liam Kapriaginnis smashes his way over and Carrick have their third try but again the conversion is missed. 21-15.

In response we have almost a carbon copy move from CI and Peden who again shows great speed and strength gets his second try with Burns again adding the conversion. 28-15.

CI lose another man to a yellow card and now again stretched at the back have to defend their line from a series of Carrick attacks as they try and close the gap but CI hold out and no further scores are added. Despite some questionable amateur dramatics on the pitch the game finishes 28 – 15 in favour of the home team.
