Medallion Shield: Campbell College 20 Royal Belfast Academical Institution 15

It was another classic schools game at Ravenhill as Campbell College and RBAI went head to head in the final of the Medallion Shield on Tuesday afternoon.

Campbell came out top by 20 – 15 but a second half revival from Inst had the crowd on the edge of their seats until the final whistle.

Inst hit back fairly quickly with slotting over a penalty to take the score to 7 – 3.

The teams battled it out in the middle of the pitch with neither side getting the upper hand until the ball found Campbell’s out wide for the full back to chip ahead into the in goal area. The bounce of the ball beat his opposite number and Davis gleefully pounced to take the score to 12 – 5 at the break.

Jay Davis touches down for Campbell’s second score.

Campbell increased their lead with a MacLean penalty early in the second half  but thereafter Inst began to edge possession and they began to claw their way back into the match.

A try from Inst’s after a period of possession moved the score along to 8 -15 and RBAI continued to pile on the pressure.

However, the Campbell defence held firm and, after soaking up the pressure, they broke upfield for to score in the corner for an unconverted try.

The game looked safe with Campbell leading 20 – 8 but Inst had other ideas and this time they made their pressure count with powering over close to the posts for Eagleson to convert. 20 – 15 with minutes left.

Jacob Boyd goes over for Royal Belfast Academical Institution.

Inst’s tails were up as they pushed for another score but Campbell weren’t going to let this one slip and they controlled the final phases to kick the ball dead for the win.
