We reconvened at Templeville Road today for the re-fixed round 6 encounter between St Mary’s College and Blackrock College and a better day for it we couldn’t have wished.
Blackrock were missing three of their frontliners to Ireland camp but it didn’t seem to trouble them as they ran amok in the first half, scoring at will.
The Rock backs filled their boots as they cut effortlessly at times through the Mary’s defence with Jackie Shiels calling the shots off swift service from Niamh Griffin. Roisin Crowe had a good game on the right wing and outside centre Ray Lawless’s pace was a real thorn in the home team’s side.
The second half was a more competitive affair as Mary’s forwards gained a foothold in the game and laid the platform for a couple of scores.
Aoife Moore’s introduction was significant, Ciara Scanlan’s quick feet were always a threat and the home team were able to generate some good go-forward with strong carrying from Emma Lackey and Casey O’Brien.
Whilst the result was never in doubt, the second-half performance went some way to restoring pride in the blue and white jersey.
