Schools Cup: Antrim Grammar 10 Carrick Grammar 22

, , ,

Carrickfergus Grammar are through to the second round of the Danske Bank Schools’ Cup after coming out on top at a wet and windy Antrim Grammar.

The hosts took the lead through a terrific individual score from Ross MacKay, which was converted by Callum Hull. Hull knocked over a long range penalty to give Antrim a 10-0 lead.

Carrickfergus put Antrim under immense pressure in the last few minutes of the first half and their endeavours paid off with tighthead prop Joshua Irvine scoring the first points of the game for his side on the half time whistle.

Liam Kaprigiannis-Green gave his side the lead for the first time in the match two minutes after the restart before Irvine added his second score.

Antrim kept plugging away in horrific conditions but couldn’t score the decisive try to get them back into the game. Ellis Bradley made it a clean sweep for the Carrickfergus front row and secured the victory with five minutes left.

Carrick now progress to the second round of the Danske Bank Schools Cup where they will host Down High School on 12th January.
