Club Men: Malone 24 QUB 5 (UR Premiership D1)

, , ,

A four-try performance was enough for Malone to triumph over Queen’s University Belfast at Gibson Park.

Malone took an early lead in bizarre fashion when a back peddling Queens’ scrum put the scrum half under pressure allowing Conor Spence to intercept on the opposition’s 5m line to score.

Jonathan Davis added his side’s second score after a dominant scrum from the hosts. Mark O’Connor added the extras.

Queens struggled to fire a shot in the first quarter and were pegged back with a third score for Malone. Ben Halliday dotted down after a five metre maul.

The visitors found some possession and territory in the final ten minutes of the half thanks to strong carrying from Rory Bell and David Whitten but Malone inside centre Josh Pentland popped up with a crucial interception on his own line to relieve pressure.

Queens were the better side in the second half and put together some great passages of play through offloads. However it wasn’t until the 70th minute when winger Jonathan Hunter got the visitors on the board.

Malone held off a fight back from the visitors to secure the win with two minutes left. Joshua Davidson was the scorer.
