The Women’s All Ireland Cup kicks off this Sunday, 7th January. There will be three Ulster clubs involved as Ballynahinch and Malone join Cooke in this season’s draw.

It’s difficult to know what tway things will go at Ballynahinch but logic would indicate a comfortable win for Blackrock even though the Dublin outfit have been somewhat erratic this season.

The other Ulster teams have been drawn together with the “up and coming” Malone Women side hosting the the “Ulster matriarchs” Cooke Women in our tie of the round.

The match comes maybe a season too early for Malone who have improved dramatically this season but Cooke, after two defeats to Railway Union, have entered their, now traditional, period of mid season turmoil and may be vulnerable if Malone can stay in the game for an extended period.  It should be an interesting match.

With the top two All Ireland League sides, UL Bohemian and Railway Union, receiving a bye into the next round  the full first round draw is shown below.

Ballincollig RFC v Highfield Ballincollig
Ballynahinch v Blackrock Ballymacarn Park
Malone v Cooke Gibson Park
Rathdrum RFC v Old Belvedere Rathdrum
Shannon v Galwegians Coonagh
St. Mary’s v Tullamore Templeville Road

Shannon and Ballincollig will fancy their chances against Galwegians and Highfield respectively as both of the AIL sides have shown indifferent form this season and with all the AIL sides drawn away from home there could be a few upsets this weekend.
