Our final Schools Cup match of Round 2 featured a convincing 38 – 15 win for Rainey Endowed against Belfast High in perhaps the most entertaining game of the round.

The win for the Magherafelt side sets up an eagerly anticipated home tie in Round 3 against, equally high scoring, Portadown College who beat Limavady 36 – 5 in their second round game.

A first half Bryn Davis brace for Rainey, both converted by Harry Evans, more than cancelled out an early Belfast High penalty from Brandon McMinn. However the High School pulled the score back to 14 – 8 following an unconverted try from Scott McDowell.

Despite their handling sometimes letting them down, Rainey further extended their lead at the break when Karl Warner crossed on the stroke of half time for their third try of the game with Evans landing the conversion to make it 21 – 8 as the teams changed ends.

A strong start to the second half for the High School saw Ryan Gibson cross, which McMinn converted to take the score to 21 – 15  but the impressive Rainey side were not to be denied and they responded almost immediately with an unconverted try from Ciaran Doyle.

Furter tries came from Davies, who completed his hat-trick, and Jack Breland crossed for the final score of the morning. Evans converted one to give a final score of Rainey Endowed 38 Belfast High School 15.
