UWL: Ballynahinch 36 City of Derry 0

Ballynahinch Women entertained City of Derry Women on Sunday afternoon with the hosts coming out on top with a 36 – 0 win.

It was a case of third playing second in the Ulster Women’s League and, with this victory, Ballynahinch have leapfrogged their North West opponents and now lead the charge after runaway leaders Malone Women.

It was a physically attritional match between these two teams with the first half stretching on for almost 50 minutes as both sides shipped a few injuries.

Derry started well and they probably enjoyed the bulk of possession and territory but they tended to overcommit at the contact area and honey potted around the ball allowing Hinch to pick up a lot of yards in their counter attacks.

Hinch’s first score came from left wing  who found herself in plenty of space out wide. Scrum half  then took over, picking up a first half brace as she exposed some lax defence around the breakdown.

The experienced Aoife Quinn was next to cross, before a mazy run from  ended with her doting down under the posts. Corbett crossed for her hat trick late on. Full back Alexa Grudgings chipped in with three conversions to give a final score of Ballynahinch 36 City of Derry 0.

In the other match of the weekend , Cavan came out on top by 18 – 22 in their local derby at Virginia. The newly formed Virginia Women’s side will be pleased to have picked up a losing bonus in this closely fought contest.
