Malone 2nds came out on top against Portadown in this rearranged Ulster Junior Cup Quarter final on Saturday afternoon at Portadown Rugby Club. The Belfast side now face Ballynahinch 2nds in the semi final, scheduled to be played on Saturday 25th November at Hinch.

This truly was a game of two half’s as Portadown dominated proceedings for most of the first half. A converted try from Gary Hall on the quarter hour was followed twenty minutes later by a penalty try to give the home side a 14 – 0 lead against a sluggish looking Malone.

However a converted try from Malone’s hard working winger Johnny Ogilvy, just before the break, give the Red Socks something to work on in the second half, the teams turning round with the score reading Portadown 14 Malone 7.

Ogilvy crossed early in the second half for another converted try and the whole game changed completely as Malone dominated the remainder.

Abrasive second row Lee Barlow crossed for a brace of his own as the Belfast side cranked up the pressure and winger Neal Alcorn added the fifth score late in the game. There were no further conversions, the game ending with a final score of Portadown 14 Malone II 29.
