Women: AIL Week 5 – Cooke v Old Belvedere

We’re just over a third of the way through the regular season fixtures and it looks as though the Women’s All Ireland League is continuing to split as the top four continue to pull away from the bottom four.

I’m afraid our featured team, Cooke Women RFC, continue to remain planted in the bottom, slipping to 6th place after a comprehensive defeat by Old Belvedere at Shaw’s Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

Cooke 14 Old Belvedere 45

Cooke, resplendent in their new kit, got off to the best of starts with Eliza Downey crossing and Jemma Jackson converting to give the home side a 7 – 0 lead.

However Old Belvedere kicked it up a gear and hit back with scores from Maria KennyLinda Djougang and a brace from Alison Millar to take the score to 7 – 31 at the break.

A more even second half saw Miller complete her hat-trick before Shannon Davidson sneaked in for a second try for Cooke, again converted by Jackson. It was the visitors though that had the final say as Nora Stapleton grabbed a try, to add to her six conversions and a penalty, to give a final score of Cooke 14 Old Belvedere 45.

UL Bohemians 36 St Marys 10

UL Bohs consolidated their position at the top of the league with a try bonus win against St Mary’s.

Despite St Mary’s taking the lead through a penalty, a five try blitz from UL decided the game in the first half as Liz Bourke and Niamh Kavanagh each grabbed a brace, Deirbhile Nic a Bhaird chipping in with the fifth to wrap up the game just past the half hour mark.

St Mary’s replacement Orli Schlachter crossed for a second half converted try but Boh’s Liz Bourke had the final say, securing her hat-trick late in the game.

Galwegians 13 Blackrock 12

Galwegians slipped to third in the league despite a one point home win against Blackrock in the closest game of this round and yet another thriller at Crowley Park.

Two Mairead Coyne tries and a penalty gave the hosts a 13 – 7 lead as the game went into the final minutes. However a late score from Carmela Morley pushed the score to 13 – 12 with the conversion to come. To the relief of the home side the attempt drifted wide to keep the Connacht outfit in the top three mix.

Railway Union 36 Highfield 17

We’d christened Railway the unluckiest team so far this season after losing three games to the odd score, however they hit back in some style with a bonus try win against Highfield.

The win, in which Lindsay Peat grabbed a brace, sees Railway jump to fifth place in the League with Highfield slipping back to bottom spot.
