Once again our friends at Sharksworld have come to our aid with the inside track on our latest signing. Many thanks to Rob Otto for the article and Steve Haag of stevehaagsports.com for providing the picture.

When the news of Marcell Coetzee’s move to Ulster at the end of the current Super Rugby season emerged, it’s probably fair to say that Sharks fans moved pretty quickly from the initial shock and disbelief to resigned disappointment. After all, this sort of thing is becoming all too familiar in South African rugby of late and a player of Coetzee’s calibre would always be a prime target.

Coetzee has always been a very special player to Sharks fans – representing that rarest of breeds in the modern game, the true “home grown hero”. Growing up in one of Durban’s less fashionable neighbourhoods, Coetzee had to fight for every honour that came his way and was regularly overlooked for age-group teams en . . .

  1. He will be sorely missed in the black and white. Ulster is a fantastic club and have treated our beloved Sharks very well. Have been following your progress ever since you signed one of my favorite players, Louis Ludik. Soon soon my wife and I will be visiting Ireland and hopefully we can watch a game or two at Ravenhill or Kingspan as its known now. Kind regards, Willem aka willemv10

    Dear Ulster fans.

Don’t let Marcell’s absence from the World Cup fool you. He’s the best loose forward that South Africa currently has to offer.

I wish Marcell only the best.

    Another Sharks fan here.

We will miss Marcell hugely at the Sharks. A player that never gives less than 150% and he’s refined his skills immensely in the last couple of years. Ulster is truly receiving him in the in his absolute prime.

    You will be missed

One more factor that may have contributed to Marcell’s departure at the Sharks is that the Super Rugby format is bordering on farcical with the latest round of changes being introduced this year. There’s a very real chance that this could shorten a player like Marcell’s career by a few years. I can’t recall a win or loss where Marcell wasn’t giving his all.

I’ll be doing my bit from this side by supporting his new team. Please welcome his family and look after him.

I am a fellow sharks supporter, black and white forever. I’ve been living in Ulster for the past 20 years and been going to Ravenhill and now Kingspan for a very long time and if there’s one thing I know about rugby in Ulster, it’s that the supporters know their rugby and support their rugby with unbridled passion. Marcell will undoubtedly become a firm favourite here, not to mention that he will feel right at home when he sees and here’s the SAFAs in the crowd. SUFTUM of Stan Op Vir Die Ulster Manne

What a beautifully written article. We promise to give Marcell and his wife a wholehearted welcome to Ulster – we owe all you Sharks fans a massive thank you for fielding us such amazing gentlemen and talented players. If any of you EVER visit, promise you’ll make yourselves known and we’ll show you some of our hospitality and craic. Thank you.

    1. Hi Helen. We hope to have Rob and his family over next season. ?
