Heineken Cup: Ulster 15 Saracens 17

The new Stadium Ravenhill pulled back the curtains on a spellbinding performance for it’s unofficial opening night.

This match had it all, heroes and villains aplenty, a big dollop of controversy, masses of thrills and spills, cheers and booing by the bucket full, more twists and turns than a spring going down a helter skelter and, to top it all off, it ended with a gut wrenching finale –  absolutely brilliant!

Unfortunately the result didn’t go Ulster’s way but, if this is a sample of what the new stadium is going to be like, I can’t wait to get back!

Ulster had the worst of starts. A dangerously clumsy challenge from Jared Payne on Alex Goode saw both players leave the field, Goode on a stretcher and Payne on the back of a red card. Ulster were down to 14 men with less than five minute played.

Worse was to come for the home side as talisman Rory Best limped off minutes later ,replaced by Rob Herring, but the . . .

  1. Great report John! Proud to be an ULSTER fan # SUFTUM always!!!!!

  2. Have to say the language from some guys behind us was not called for! Think quite a few where tanked up well before kick off, making it feel more like a football match! I’m all for having a few pints but some had had a few at lunch on top of the 8 during the match! Which of course lead to constant running in and out of their spot during the game. Can’t help wondering if they remembered most of the match today! And how many responsible supporters didn’t get tickets!
Rant over and didn’t even mention the ref!!
Lads where tremendous and deserved to win…but maybe it’s to be third times a charm for us.

  3. That was only my second ever time at Ravenhill the new stands werent in conception last time I was there. Being an exile I will miss it every game I watch on tv! The language and respect from were I was sitting was absolutely spot on and though the passion spilt over for that one kick from Farrell I actually felt it was the Sarrie fans behind me making more noise during the kicking.

The game is past and done and I have no doubt if we had 15 on that field we would’ve won, awesome resolve from all our lads! The Ravenhill Roar has got to be something to fear for any team visiting! Hopefully I will be back at Ravers some time soon and until then I’ll be SUFTUMing from home for the rest of the (all going well) 6 games we have left 😉

  4. Stop talking sense FFS. You’ll annoy the natives.
