With the school rugby season coming to an end we’re happy to promote Northern Ireland’s only senior Baseball side, Belfast Northstars.

The club was formed in 1996 and joined Baseball Ireland in 1997  where it competes against teams from Dublin, Clare, Munster and Cavan in a cross community and cross gender league.

Home games are played at Henry Jones Memorial Playing Field in Castlereagh where the council will soon be building a diamond for their matches.

This year the Belfast Northstars will be entering a ‘B’ League Development Side in tandem with their ‘A’ Team and they are looking to recruit new players. We went along to one of their training sessions last weekend at Shankill Road Leisure Centre  to check out what they can offer.

It’s an impressive set up where coach Jon Carter puts the squad through a series of batting and catching exercises with different levels of skills and experience accounted for as the players are taken through some simple exercises leading up to intense batting practice in the cage under the guidance of coach Carter and his support team.

During the hour long session I was impressed with how everyone was kept involved and with the structure of the training which ramped up the pressure as the players moved through the routines.

If you are interested in giving it a go check out The Belfast Northstars Baseball Club on Facebook, check out @NorthstarsBB on Twitter or drop by their website at belfastbaseball.co.uk.

Check out details at the above sites but training should now start to take place at Ormeau Park on Wednesdays and Saturdays now the clocks have changed and the club will be competing in their  first games of the season this Sunday at Henry Jones Memorial Playing Field where they will play the Dublin Spartans.

The fun starts at 11:00am on Sunday 7th April so why not get along and check it out.
