Members of the Mengal Taggers after their Relay for Life 10K race at Banbridge.

In all the hubbub surrounding Ulster’s Heineken Cup campaign we overlooked the success of our sponsored tag team the Mengal Taggers in the Volkswagen Tag competition at Queens University.

Future superstar Jemma Jackson with Gareth Bronte, Brian O'Shaughnessy and Christine Henning after winning the Volkswagen Tag Spring League.

Mengal won four out of five league games with a depleted side losing their last league run out against, Queens side, Shy Teds, a side featuring FRU favourites and Irish Internationals Ashleigh Baxter and Nikki Caughey. The result left both sides level on points at the top of the league and both went through to a winner takes all final the following week.

With the Taggers welcoming back Scott Nelson from Junior Ulster duty and the delightful, and No. 1 FRU Girl, Eliza Downey from GAA commitments the Taggers went on to beat the Queens side 23 – 9 in the final with player of the match going to the classy Downey.

The Taggers have also made a winning start to the Volkswagen Tag Summer League winning their first match last night 29 – 14.

Young, fit and gorgeous, well apart from team manager and occasional player Gareth Bronte, the Taggers also found time to take part in the Banbridge 10K earlier this week to raise money for Cancer Research. The Taggers will also be making be attempting to break a Guiness World Record for the longest continuous game of rugby ever, over 30 hours, at Banbridge Rugby Club on 9/10 June. All proceeds from their World Record attempt will be in aid of Cancer Research UK, you can donate here –

The Mengal Taggers would like to thank their co-sponsors, the Bronte Steak House, Banbridge, and Shoefair Sports, Banbridge. Just a note to let people know, if they fancy a meal out if they go to the Bronte Steak House and mention Mengal Taggers they will get 10% off their bill.
