Ireland for England: Trimble starts!

by

, ,

Andrew Trimble and Jonathan Sexton have both been named in the starting XV for Ireland’s RBS 6 Nations clash with England on Saturday

There are two changes in personnel in the back-line and also a positional switch. Keith Earls moves to full-back in place of Luke Fitzgerald.

Andrew Trimble comes into the team on the left wing for his first start in this year’s Championship. Jonathan Sexton will start the game at out-half, with Ronan O’Gara moving to the replacements bench.

Eoin Reddan has made good progress from the concussion he received in last Saturday’s match against Wales and will visit a neurologist this week to confirm he is fit to play.

IRELAND: (15-9) Keith Earls, Tommy Bowe, Brian O’Driscoll, Gordon D’Arcy, Andrew Trimble, Jonathan Sexton, Eoin Reddan. (1-8) Cian Healy, Rory Best, Mike Ross, Donncha O’Callaghan, Paul O’Connell, Sean O’Brien, David Wallace, Jamie Heaslip. (16-22) Sean Cronin, Tom Court, Leo Cullen, Denis Leamy, Peter Stringer, Ronan O’Gara, Paddy Wallace

While it id good to see Trimble get his start I must admit I’d have liked to have . . .

    So is this it?
Is this how DK thinks he can stop the rot of the last 4 games?
Bring back Andy Trimble and Jonny Sexton and move Earls to fullback and that is going to sort out our woes?? I fully agree with Trimble and Sexton regaining their spots. Trimble is clearly the best Irish winger at the moment, both defensively and in attack, with Tommy Bowe running a close second, and Sexton, although low in confidence, partly due to the chopping and changing at 10 and partly due to him not being on full song yet, is clearly the future for Irish rugby, so let him have a good run of games without him worrying at what point is RoG going to come on. (As a side issue that run of games is running out with the WC looming.)
What about D’arcy? If ever a player was out of sorts it is him and it’s not through DK chopping and changing as he has been an ever present all season. Surely we need to look at alternatives at centre, not only for D’arcy but God forbid if BoD got injured! I have not seen enough of McFadden to comment, but 1 player I have seen enough of is Spence, surely it must be time to try these 2 young proteges and yes you may say that England may not be the right game to experiment but if not now then when!!! The six nations is gone this season but the WC is definately not!!

With all the sympathy notes being handed out by the Irish media for McFadden/Fitzgerald and poison pen notes on Paddy Wallace it was distinctly disappointing that the best counterattacking back three player in Ireland was ignored until now.

Hope to see Andy T show ’em what they have missed the last 3 games.

Well I got the Trimble on the wing and Earls to full back right

Personnally I don’t think Faloon is ready for the elevation to International level and an England game would not be my joice to introduce him to the experience.

Paddy is a waste on the bench and neither Reddan nor Stringer vary the game sufficently to distract a back row both are just link/passers/ with the odd hoist into the box from within their own 10 metre line so in my book subbing one is a waste of a bench space.

DK was never going to change the D’Arcy / BoD midfield defence in this match the time to play McFadden in the centre was the Italy match not the England game but Trimbles injury made that a non starter.

The Cullen call depends on which you consider is the more important the lineout or the scrum we hopefully will hold are own in the lineout but the scrum could be under pressure if the ref fails to stop the English from boring/ illegal binding in the front row for this reason I think Cullen on the bench is right.

I would have preferred Boss and McFaddan on the bench to Wallace and and Stringer as both players have a better all round ability to be played in a number of positions. Stringer is a fast pass scrum half period Wallace is a 12 or at a push cover for outhalf which is covered by RoG . Boss covers scrum half /back three and McFadden would cover centre and wing adequately Similiarly Boss at scrum half can provide the opennings for the backrow ball carriers much better than either Stringer or Redden think back to the Ulster v Leinster match both SoB trys were made by Boss .

The starting XV seems a par for the course DK XV but his bench choices don’t inspire the imagination.
