Ben Robinson: A family message.

The family of have contacted The Front Row Union on order to clarify matters relating to the tragic death of their son which occurred on Saturday 29th January whilst Ben was playing rugby for Carrick Grammar.

Ben died whilst playing the game he loved. In the words of his mother Karen, “He lived and breathed rugby and saw the five days in school as the reason to play on a Saturday. ”

Over the last week the family have been upset and dismayed about the uninformed opinions and speculation on web sites blaming everyone from the referee, to school coaches to the non-use of head gear for Ben’s death.

The reason for Ben’s death has been fully explained to the family by the Neurological Department of the Royal Victoria Hospital with the tragedy being a complete freak accident and that no form of headgear or supervision would have saved him.

The family are clarifying this, in these difficult times, as they feel that to speculate otherwise is disrespectful to, and distressing for, the coaches, players and others that encouraged and participated in Ben’s enjoyment of the game he loved. In the words of this mother, “I feel it is callous to discuss Ben like a statistic by the ill informed ‘after the incident’ experts for simply playing a game he loved.”

The family would like to take this opportunity to express how overwhelmed they were by the turn out of the rugby fraternity at Ben’s funeral. They were especially touched by the turn out of Ben’s team mates who were and are a credit to him. They would like to thank everyone for attending and are deeply touched by the messages of condolence they have received.
