Despite a gutsy performance, Ireland A were eventually steamrollered by the bigger heavier England pack. Ireland need to find some muscle up front if we are not going to be bullied out of games on a regular fashion. It’ll be interesting to see where Italy take on “The Untouchables” later today.Boss, Bowe, Caldwell and Young all started for the A side.

Boss looked hesitant getting the ball away but his work rate and covering were phenomenal and his organisation kept Ireland in the game for long periods.

Bowe was easily the most threatening player on the pitch and, in attack, he looked a class apart. Good lines, speed and strength saw him break the gain lane on nearly every occasion he got the ball. Unfortunately he only got the ball about half a dozen times. Let’s hope he gets the recognition he deserves.

Caldwell, four inches taller and two stone heavier would have been starting for Ireland today. He has everything in his game including a bit of an edge. He just needs to bulk up. Great hands to put Bowe clear for his score.

Young always appears too nice for the front row but he put in a competent enough display at the coal face. I just wish he had a bit of Caldwell’s edge. He needs a mouthy hooker to get him going.

Deccy Fitzpatrick came on for Young with 15 to go and looked comfortable enough. Still needs to work on his conditioning as he’ll be a class act when he gets it sorted.

O’Connor also got the final 15 behind a beaten pack and didn’t have much chance to shine with ball in hand. Pollock didn’t get on.

Of the others Duffy and Keogh impressed while Horgan and Sheahan had games they probably would want to forget.
