The fixtures for the Senior Women’s Interpovincial Series were announced yesterday.

The Sportsground, Donnybrook and Thomond Park will be hosting fixtures but none at Ravenhill, despite there being no clashes with any of the men’s fixtures. #LEGACY?

There is very little empathy for the Women’s game at Ulster Rugby. It’s not just the women’s game though, they have little empathy for the game outside of the professional team – everyone below it suffers. While Logan counts his pennies and dreams of World Domination the rest of the provinces move further and further ahead.

However, there are reasons to be hopeful in this seasons Women’s Interprovincial series. Both Ulster Rugby and, their main supplier of players, Cooke Women RFC have new coaching tickets, who appear to be doing an excellent job, but the nature of the departure of the previous coaching tickets at both has in my opinion had a huge influence.

Fortunately, either by accident or design, the new coaches, Derek Suffern at Ulster and Alasdair McKee at Cooke, seem to have aligned their style of play rather seamlessly and both sides are playing an attractive, fast paced, attacking game.

Cooke have made an encouraging start to the Women’s AIL winning five out of thier first six fixtures and Ulster Women, for the first time ever, had two preseason friendlies which they won comfortably, albeit against low key opposition. An added bonus is the huge improvements at Malone Women who have been winning games for fun in the Ulster Women’s League providing much needed competition for spaces in the Ulster Women’s squad.

Now, before we get too carried away, it must be remembered that it’s 2012 since Ulster Women last won a competitive fixture and the gap between them and the other provinces widened dramatically in the intervening years, but there has definitely been progress this season. Let’s hope it continues.
