Stockdale impresses as Ireland thrash poor South Africa

, ,

The transition from provincial rugby to the international scene has been effortless for Jacob Stockdale as he grabbed a try in Ireland’s 38-3 demolition over a shambolic Springboks side.

Rob Herring came off the bench to cross the line while Andrew Conway and Rhys Ruddock were the other try scorers.

Johnny Sexton gave Ireland an early lead with a penalty inside the first few minutes and then extended the lead to nine points with a further two penalties at the 20 minute mark. Andrew Conway was quickest to react to a Courtnall Skosan fumble off an unusually poor Conor Murray box kick to score Ireland’s first try.

Testament to Ireland’s excellent defence, South Africa did not breach the home side’s 22m line in the first quarter of the game. South Africa were laboured in attack and they only made one break in the whole game. Elton Jantjies’ failure to offer anything creative from out half allowed Ireland’s steady defensive pace to close the space of South Africa’s outside backs.
