PRO12: The PRO12’s American Adventure!

There was quite a lot of interest generated recently when Irish Rugby’s CEO stated that the PRO12 was looking at the option of expanding the franchise into the USA. Unfortunately it’s not the quality of the rugby that would be the driving force behind the expansion but the relentless pursuit of filthy lucre! 

CEO of the IRFU Philip Browne stated at the IRFU AGM

“Change is required if the Pro12 is to remain a meaningful tournament. The revenues generated by the tournament need to double or treble if the participating clubs/provinces are to remain competitive with the clubs in the English and French leagues.”

The main issue appears to be that broadcast revenue only brings 14m euro a season to the PRO12 who are somewhat jealous that the English and the French clubs rake in 51m euro and 97m euro respectively from their broadcast deals! It’s all smoke and mirrors says I, with a few dismal seasons from the Irish in the PRO12 being blamed on lack of revenue instead of the . . .
