Butler Shield: Larne 19 Malone 29

Carrickfergus Rugby Club hosted the Butler Shield Final between Larne 3rd XV and Malone 4th XV on Saturday afternoon with Malone coming out on top 19 – 29 in a tightly contested final.

Larne, obviously at a disadvantage having been forced to play at the grounds of their arch nemesis, got off to a slow start conceding a converted intercept try to go behind 7 – 0.

However, the Larne side, who were able to call on legends such as Stephen Marshall, quickly regrouped to hit back, executing a well worked back move that saw Johnny Shirley cross for an unconverted try.

Things got better for the East Antrim outfit when Gareth Rennix crossed for Larne’s second and with Johnny Hall adding the extras Larne led 12 – 7.

Malone refused to lie down and with their centres causing havoc the Larne defence was sliced open for two quick tries. One touchdown was converted and Malone lead 19 – 12.
