With the new European competition details likely to be announced today or tomorrow it looks as though the English have got pretty much what they want out of the debacle with the PRO12 the big losers in the qualification shake up.

The top tier of the new competition will be reduced to 20 teams featuring seven from the PRO12 and six from both the English Premiership and the French Top 14. The final qualifier will come from a play off, thought to be initially between teams from the English and French leagues though other options may be available after the first season.

The PRO12 Qualification will guarantee one team from each of Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Italy with the remaining three places picked on league standing. At the current league placings this would see the following teams qualify.

Ireland: Leinster, Munster, Ulster . . .
