Heineken Cup: Ulster 48 Treviso 0

Ulster romped to a 48 – 0 win against a hapless Treviso at Ravenhill last night in the third round of the Heineken Cup. The result leaves Ulster top of Pool 5 on 13 points with Leicester and Montpellier slugging it out for second place later this afternoon.

The seven tries came from Paddy Jackson, Luke Marshall (2), John Afoa, Dan Tuohy, Sean Doyle and Andrew Trimble with Jackson adding five conversions and a penalty.

I’d predicted greater resistance from Treviso, out of respect for their departing long time coach Franco Smith, and indeed the tears, snotters and superhuman effort may still come in Treviso next week, but Ulster went a long way to hammering the fight out of the visitors with a controlled, but still passionate, display that emphasised the gulf in class between the two teams.

Payne, Pienaar and Muller seamlessly slotted back into the side, all adding class and composure at critical times, but to me the Man of the Match was out-half Jackson who adds more to his already impressive repertoire with every . . .
