Lions 64 – 0 Combined Country XV

The British and Irish Lions completed a comprehensive ten-try rout over Combined New South Wales-Queensland Country in an extremely one-sided game in Newcastle.

Tries from Cuthbert, Murray, Hogg, North (2) and Hibbard gave the Lions a richly deserved 38-0 half time lead at Hunter Stadium.

Four more tries in a less clinical second half from O’Driscoll, Halfpenny, O’Brien and Davies took the final tally up to 64 for no reply, the first time The Lions have kept an opposition scoreless since their trip to Western Australia in 1989.

The Lions dominated from start to finish in a game that some doubted should even have taken place, given that the majority of their opponents were semi-professional (mostly builders and electricians), only a handful of whom had Super 15 caps to their names. But still, at least it was played in the sensible winter climate of New South Wales and not in the fires of Mount Doom, as was the case against the Baa Baas.

The tourists still had a job to do though, and an early rout was on the cards . . .
