Ireland: Houston heat stifles Ireland!

Ian Madigan kicked Ireland to a 12 – 15 win against the USA in a physical game in Houston last night. The home side, spurred on by an enthusiastic crowd, pushed Ireland all the way but Madigan’s five kicks proved just about enough to defeat the physical challenge of the Americans.

Having stayed up late to watch this one I must admit I got more enjoyment out of the shenanigans of the supporters than I did out of the game.  The rugby culture in the USA is largely focused round alcohol and, with few cultural restraints surrounding their “match day”  behaviour, it certainly makes for a raucous atmosphere and a wonderfully partisan support.

It was a big party, pantomime type, atmosphere with Ireland cast in the role of the baddies, and while the home team didn’t quite boo the anthems, they did take great pleasure in booing every kick at goal by the Irish.

Madigan coped relatively easily in the cauldron of noise as he slotted over his first penalty in the 10th minute, to push Ireland three points clear, and he doubled the lead eight minutes later  as Ireland made a steady if . . .
