Autumn Internationals: Ireland 12 South Africa 16

Ireland stumbled to a 12 – 16 defeat against South Africa on Saturday afternoon in a substandard game at the Aviva. The only try of the game came from Ulster’s Ruan Pienaar with the rest of the visitors points coming from the boot Patrick Lambe. Ireland responded with four penalties from Jonny Sexton.

It won’t take long to go through the highlights as this was a dour game with few thrills and spills, the crowd only getting excited when the players frustration boiled over into the occasional bout of handbags.

Sexton kicked four penalties in the first half as South Africa struggled to find any form. Lambe responded with one penalty for the visitors. South African winger JP Pietersen got yellow carded for a late tackle on Chris Henry on the 32nd minute but Ireland failed to take advantage of their extra man.

South Africa upped the tempo in the second half and rumbled up to the try line with their big pack. Ireland escaped what looked like a certain penalty try for the visitors, but did lose Heaslip for ten minutes, as Ireland gave away a succession of penalties . . .
