Sunday 7th October saw prospective Queen’s students invited to a day of “Inspiration for Sport” at the newly developed Riddel Hall.
Over 100 school leavers who are on course to achieve in sport and academia were chosen from across Ireland and GB. Pupils were delivered sessions on coaching, psychology, conditioning, academic planning and career advice from local stars representing many different sports such as Iain Henderson (Ulster Rugby), Sam Lynch and Richard Archibald (Irish Rowing), Jimmy Kirkwood (Hockey Olympian) and Dick Clerkin (GAA).
In a busy day the students were also given a talk from the Director of Swedish Rowing, Leif Pettersson on how performing at a high level in sport and academia can complement each other to achieve great results in both.
The guests still managed to find time to pack in a tour of Queen’s University’s impressive sporting and teaching facilities. The Rugby players received advice on Strength and conditioning from Chris Shields (Ulster Rugby), Skill Development from Brian McLaughlin (Ulster Rugby) and Sports Psychology from Professor Cathy Craig (Queen’s University Belfast).
