PREDICTIONS – CUP ROUND 3
So how did you do last time? If you were paying attention, you will have noticed that Wellington College caught me out (but BIG congratulations to them) along with Banbridge Academy and the Portora RS v Dalriada game – if only I had listened to my own advice and went with the draw… Anyway, so here we are for Round 3; my predictions and reasons are below. Feel free to agree/disagree as before and make sure you enter before the Saturday morning deadline!
Belfast HS v Bangor GS
Despite having a very poor opening top their season, Bangor GS have found a bit of form which has been enough for them to at least challenge stronger opponents. Belfast will be buoyed by a very convincing win over Larne GS in the previous round (incidentally, the same Larne team who claimed their first win of the season against Belfast’s current opponents of Bangor), but Bangor should have enough to see off Belfast which may be closer than some might expect.
MY PICK: BANGOR GS
Cambridge House v Wellington College
In my opinion, Wellington College pulled off something of a surprise against Friends’ SL in their previous round which makes this match-up all the more harder to call. While it is true that Cambridge have had a run of form recently, it has come against teams below them; thankfully for them, Wellington IS one of those. I hoping that the Belfast tem don’t prove me wrong again and I’m going for Cambridge.
MY PICK: CAMBRIDGE HOUSE
Dalriada v Regent House
It’s no secret that Regent House have been having a terrible season by their standards so, with a home advantage, Dalriada may fancy their chances. However, Regent are probably still good enough to come through this fixture relatively unscathed and have and added advantage due to Dalriada’s reply against their previous opponents.
MY PICK: REGENT HOUSE
Down HS v Coleraine AI
Coleraine AI are another team of who have underachieved this season, while Down HS have hit a great run of form in the last number of weeks. Also considering Coleraine’s lengthy trip down through the country I can only see this going one way.
MY PICK: DOWN HS
Foyle & L’Derry v Banbridge Academy
Banbridge Academy had a close game against Omagh Academy in their previous match (so much so that it cost me a correct prediction). This match shouldn’t be anywhere near as close with the school from the North West having one of their best seasons in recent years.
MY PICK: FOYLE & L’DERRY
Grosvenor GS v Sullivan Upper
With two near-geographical rivals pitted against each other and the fact they are the two of the best teams in round 3, this is one of, if not thee, tie of the round. Sullivan Upper in recent memory have been the better of the two, although not by much. This year sees a similar situation, but with Grosvenor GS being much better and closer in performance than before; add to this a recent run of form (along with poor one for Sullivan) and I see this as a win – just about – for Grosvenor.
MY PICK: GROSVENOR GS
Portadown College v RS Dungannon
Portadown have been hovering just outside the top-8 teams for most of the season; RS Dungannon had a great start to their season but have since slipped somewhat. This could be another close game but Portadown should make it through.
MY PICK: PORTADOWN COLLEGE
Rainey ES v BRA
Rainey ES had a strong (albeit expected) win against Carrickfergus GS in their previous match but will have a much harder time against BRA, despite the Belfast team having a stop-start season. It may prove too much for them, however, with BRA getting back on track recently.
MY PICK: BRA
