Ireland's Iain Henderson gets ready to nab the South African outhalf in this summers Junior World championships.
Ulster Ravens begin their warm up for the B & I Cup with an Inter Provincial Fixture this Friday evening at Donnybrook. KO 6:00pm.
Here’s our best shot at what the team will be, and it won’t be that far off, but with the seniors apparently forgetting over the last three matches that when they pull on an Ulster shirt they are representing the hopes and aspirations of our wee Province the match should also be used as a kick up the arse for some of the “Big Time Charlie’s” who think it is sufficient to turn up and go through the motions.
Forwards: Callum Black, Kyle McCall, Conor Carey, Niall Annett, John Burns, Neill McComb, James Simpson, David McGuigan, Ali Birch, Iain Henderson, Conor Joyce, Sean O’Connell.
Backs: Ian Porter, Blane McIlroy, Patrick Jackson, James McKinney, Stuart Olding, Chris Farrell, Conor Gaston, Chris Cochrane, Ricky Andrew, Peter Nelson.
None of the above has been confirmed and there are a couple of injury concerns, but, on paper it looks like a sweet set of backs if they can gel and, of course if they get enough ball from the pack.
Up front it’s fairly lightweight, as is the norm for an Ulster pack and really I’d like to see Ulster start to use this as an advantage concentrating on high technical ability and generating fast ball.
It looks likely that they’ll start with Black, Annett and Carey in the front row with McComb and Simpson in second. A backrow of McGuigan, Birch and Henderson should also start and could do very well with Henderson’s move into the backrow something we’ve been flagging for a while now. Certainly Henderson was one of the Irish players who reputation improved the longer the JWC went on during the summer and I’d expect the youngster to get a few run outs for the seniors this season.
