It’s the biggest Ireland game of my lifetime (well, for a week at least) and being that I’m an “old fart” it’s probably the biggest game of yours so it would be a shame to miss it live just because you couldn’t get out of bed on Saturday morning in time to watch Ireland kick off against Wales IN THE FRIGGING QUARTER FINAL OF THE WORLD CUP!

While it may seem attractive, at the time, to rollover and go back to sleep, convincing yourself  it’ll be just as good on SKY+ a few hours later, you know deep inside that it’s just not true! No matter what you do to avoid it, you will have already heard the score and one of your boring life’s great enjoyments will have been wasted, for all time, just because you were cosy!

As a veteran of many an early morning flight to get home from some god forsaken hole of an airport at an away Ulster match we can offer you a few tips on how to make sure you are up and, importantly, alert.

1. Get up early the morning before.

Not so much a trial run but a chance to get your body clock right for that all important match. Get up early and go to bed early that night so you are fully refreshed for your big morning. Now I know there is an Ulster game on the Friday night but really you want to be home and tucked up by 10:00pm if you want to make Saturdays game. Have a few pints at the Ulster game to help you relax, but don’t overdo it or you may be tempted to stay up all night! It ain’t gonna happen! Don’t kid yourself you can get by on a few hours sleep – you’re not 18 and you’ve grown accustomed to your comforts! A tin of Red Bull isn’t going to hack it anymore, not with your slow metabolism, so be prepared!

2. Buddy up.

Buddy up with someone you know is never going to forgive you if you let them sleep in, and vice versa, and arrange to ring each other at a suitable time. It’s important that you choose a time that only just allows you to get washed and dressed and round to your chosen viewing location in time for kick off. Too early and you will just relax and roll back to sleep and too late you’ll be tempted to go “Frig it I’m going to miss the kick off so I’ll just go back to sleep and watch it later!”   Timing is everything so choose carefully.

3. Have a back up.

You’ll have your alarm on, you’ll have your buddy to ring you but you still need a back up cos believe me if you haven’t prepared properly you are going to be slightly irritable at 5:15 in the morning and your alarm may well get thrown across the room and your buddy might well get told to feck off and you’ll think little off it. However it’s a completely different matter to be rude to someone you don’t know. I know that when I get wake up calls in hotels I always try and sound chirpy and coherent! “Why yes I am up, I’ve been up for hours. Thank you for your call!” takes a lot of effort at that time of the morning and is guaranteed to snap you out of your slumbers!

In recognition of this our friends at The Errigle are offering to give you an early morning call for the big game this Saturday, so don’t miss out on Ireland’s Call get the Errigle Call by registering here. And when you’re up, nip round to the Errigle and watch it with the rest of us!
