Cooke Women are looking for new players for what promises to be another fun and exciting season of rugby for Ulster’s premier women’s side. Cooke Women’s PRO Emma Lowe tells the Front Row Union about the club:

Cooke Women RFC is the longest standing women’s club in Ulster, being established in 1992. During the formation we were placed into Division One of the All Ireland League, where we have remained to this day. Something we are all very proud of. We are still the only women’s team competing in Division One from the province of Ulster and last season (2010-2011) the team proved their Division One placing yet again, securing their place in the AIL Cup Final.

Many players have developed at Cooke to go on to play for Ulster and Ireland with 11 girls representing Ulster in 2011’s interprovincial series. However the main ethos at Cooke is to encourage new players to pick up a rugby ball and enjoy the game as we believe that the more you enjoy the game the better you play. Training is therefore a mixture of skills, fitness and fun rugby related games that are catered to all levels of experience.

It is for this reason that the team has continued to grow over the years and has recently seen a lot of new, younger players take up the Cooke jersey. So whether you want to play for fun or to be right up there challenging for honours everyone can join in down at Cooke at Shaws Bridge!

What is even more exciting this season is the placement of a new management structure for the team. The girls welcome Kevin Barlett on board aided by assistant coaches from the men’s squad as well as guest coaches being lined up for the season (watch out for some big and familiar names). This will allow for further development right the way through the squad and the budding friendships between the men’s and women’s teams will make way for some brilliant club socials throughout the season.

You have to be 18 to play senior rugby but Cooke Women encourage girls from 16 to come along and learn the game. Ulster Women’s Rugby in on the rise so get involved, get active and have fun because the only game you’ll lose is the one you don’t play!

Cooke Women train Monday and Thursday 7.00pm, Shaws Bridge, Belfast. Come along and join the fun.

I hope your recruitment goes well as long as you leave carrick alone. We have enough trouble getting players without the big team from Belfast poaching out here in the sticks.Good luck.
