North America reporter Derek Clements reports that the tourists had a hard fought win against a strong Boston Babas squad. The boys overcame heat(80 plus degrees again) a 3G pitch which caught out some of the boys with unsuitable footwear and American Football marking added top the confusion but a tour is for adventure.
The Babas were a selection of five local teams and this helped add to the large crowd watching the game.
Adam Duhig opened the scoring when he touched down in the corner following a neat positional kick by Michael Lawton.0 – 5
Unfortunately Dungannon lost Stuart McKenzie with an injury but Craig Miller stepped up to the mark. Dungannon scored again following a good lineout and quick hands from a ruck saw Junior Vic Paul Magee race in. Michael Lawton converted 0 – 12.
The Babas showed a lot of strength on their first visit to Dungannon twenty-two and their loose head Braiden Despain scored.5 – 12
Just before halftime some good Dungannon pressure resulted in a charge down from which Adam gathered and scored his second try of the tour. Again Michael Lawton converted. 5 – 19
The Babas upped their game second half with a much changed line up and looked fairly dangerous. Their handling was good and they were rewarded with tries from full back Glynn Mackenzie, number 8 Alex Verdageur and centre Alex Rollins. Two of the tries were converted putting the Babas five points ahead. Dungannon unfortunately lost Ethan Allen with an injury. 24 – 19
Dungannon dug deep and responded magnificently with Adam Duhig going close before Paul Magee raced over for his second try of the game to level the scores. The ever cool Michael Lawton slotted over the conversion to put Dungannon ahead. 26 – 24
The Babas almost stole the game in the last minute when their outhalf just missed a drop goal attempt. Dungannon had held their line and won a very tight competitive game showing massive commitment against a physically much bigger side.
Our thanks to all our hosts and to Big Aaron for his help and support throughout the tour.
