Ulster’s challenge on two fronts has now hit the buffers. Will the season be derailed or will they be able to push on through to the finish line?

Things could have been worse over the weekend with the Dragons doing us and themselves a favour by beating Ospreys in a highly entertaining match on Friday night. Unfortunately our western neighbours, Connacht were unable to turn over the Blues, with the Cardiff side pulling clear in the second half at the Showgrounds.

Fri 15 Apr 19:05 Dragons 32 – 28 Ospreys Rodney Parade 5,496
Fri 15 Apr 19:45 Connacht 12 – 26 Blues Sportsground 1,856
Fri 15 Apr 19:50 Edinburgh 32 – 15 Aironi Murrayfield 1,565
Sat 16 Apr 15:00 Treviso 19 – 16 Warriors Stadio di Monigo 4,000
Sat 16 Apr 18:15 Scarlets 6 – 13 Munster Parc y Scarlets 9,108
Sat 16 Apr 20:00 Leinster 34 – 26 Ulster Royal Dublin Society 17,670

The results see Leinster leapfrog Ulster and the Ospreys into second place and Ulster must be wary of the late challenge from Cardiff who are three points behind with a game in hand.

Ulster must at least match the Ospreys if they are to be guaranteed a top four finish and a bonus point win against Connacht and a win for Munster in Swansea would guarantee our participation in the knock out stages. A defeat for the Ospreys would put Cardiff in the driving seat to join the three Irish sides and it may hasten the disintegration of Osprelia and the return of a certain Mr Bowe!

No full houses this week but there were a few who did score five points. Rocky moves into joint 1st place with his late run but the Predictions League could go all the way till the final weekend with only five points separating the top nine. What price a draw between Aironi and Leinster?

Ospreys need to get two more match points than us across the next two rounds to overtake us. They are only a point behind, but Ulster have won more games- that’s the ML equivalent of ‘goal difference’ if you like.

If we finish level on points with the Ospreys we finish ahead of them. So if the Ospreys get 9 points from the next two games, 8 points will do it for us. If they get a maximum of 10 points we’ll need 9 points to finish ahead of them.

9 points will therefore guarantee Ulster a Top 4 finish, so let’s hope for a 5 pointer in our final home game- then we know any sort of win in Newport will be enough to finish the job!
