Friday the 20th had finally arrived, early start up at 5.30am to make my way to the airport but it didn’t matter as I was far too excited to get over an see the girls. After a short flight and train journey I was finally here – Surrey Sports Park, Guildford!
The grounds for the World Cup are first class, pitches looked great and as it was nearing the opening match of Canada v Scotland the buzz about the place was unreal. Walking up to the girls accommodation I didn’t have to second guess myself I had got the right apartment block as the Irish have customised the outside of theirs with flags, bunting and balloons! Great work ladies… Goose was the first to spot I’d arrived an came out to greet me with open arms
awwww it felt so good to be there he took me inside to meet the rest, I was overwhelmed with the hugs!
All the usual match day preparations were takin place with Ryaner braiding hair, Maz going through her notes an others chilling out thinking about the game ahead of them! A group of us headed up to watch the first World Cup game of 2010 which was won comfortably by the Canadian side. After a couple of hours chilling out I left the team to join with the mass of Irish supporters that had travelled over for the match- including my Mum! I was so glad she was there, she knows how much the team means to me and is a huge fan of the girls in green.
I found it surreal eating lunch in the sports bar watching the Austrailian v Wales match on the flat screen tv! The exposure the women’s game has had with the matches being broadcasted on SkySports is great and certainly will raise the profile of the game. In the hours leading up the the 6.30 ko you would have thought you were at a home game in Ireland as everywhere you looked there was a sea of green (pics to follow) we were making banners, doin face paints and warming up the vocal chords so the team knew that the Irish had landed!
6.25 watching Fi lead the team out on to the pitch was heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time, devastated I wasn’t running out there with them yet filled with so much pride and joy to have been a part of it. Let’s just say the anthems where highly emotional.
The final scoreline was 27-0, the score itself did not reflect the game, we were unlucky not to get some points on the board. The Irish played with passion, determination and should be so so proud of the performance they put into the game. There are so many positives to be taken away from Friday. The focus now moves towards the USA on Tuesday, another physical team but if the girls put on the display of rugby that they put on tonight I have no reason to doubt that we will come away from that game victorious.
Until next time.
