We love Short Shorts!
A busy old weekend at FRU HQ last weekend, so I thought I’d bring you up to date on some of the other stuff we’ll be doing this season.
First of all on Saturday afternoon we tootled off down to see our old mate, and new Director of Rugby, Justin Fitzpatrick at Dungannon where they played host to Instonians in the opening round of the Ulster Senior League. A good win for Fitzy with a young and exciting team against a useful enough Instonians side featuring another Ulster favourite Seamus Mallon. You can view the full report and pictures in our Club section here.
We’ll be trying to cover at least one Club match per week, depending on Ulster trips, so check back to the Club Section regularly.
Unfortunately I couldn’t hang around for a chin wag with my old mate as I had to rush back to Larne to post coverage of the Women’s World Cup match between Ireland and Kazakhstan featuring our very own Eliza Downey. Injured Ireland player, and now full time blogger, Lauren Day sent through the updates on Ireland’s brave attempt to get into the top four but, although the Downster scored and set up another try, Ireland fell just a little short and have to settle with the play-offs for fifth place.
They play the USA again tomorrow (Wednesday) and the Downster is starting again so make sure you follow our coverage over on the Women’s World Cup blog by clicking here. It’s been a great effort by the Irish girls and you can read all about it through Eliza and Lauren’s Blog. The girls are keen to keep the blog going through the Inter-pros and Six Nations so make sure you check back to get the inside track.
Sunday I spent the day at Deramore Park for the inaugural Ulster Women’s 7′s Tournament and what a great day’s entertainment that turned out to be. Some exceptional play form all the sides with a deserving final between visiting teams St Mary’s, Dublin and United Rugby, Canada.
The local sides also performed well and special mention must go to Enniskillen and Ballymoney who have both come a long way in the last few months, but the stars of the show had to be Carrick who somehow managed to beg, borrow and steal enough players from Ballymoney to find themselves in the Plate Final against local power houses Cooke.
I think by the end of the competition some of the girls weren’t sure what side they were on. I must also give a special word of thanks to “Short-Shorts” on the United Rugby side for keeping an old photographer happy!
Some great play and some brutal tackles and you can read all about it, along with 16 photo galleries, in our Woman’s Section here.
A great weekend, and this one is stacking up to be just a as good with Ulster entertaining the Ospreys in the Magners League, the sensational U20′s travelling to Cork for their Inter-pro against Munster, City of Derry against Harlequins on Saturday and Sunday we’re off to London for the final day of the Women’s World Cup finals. Phew!
