Well the day that we have been building up to has come and gone England Vs Ireland in our opening game of the WRWC 2010 and unfortunately we’ve came out on the wrong side of the result.

The team and management as a whole have taken a lot away from the game, from the off we were expecting big hits from the English but the ferocity, skill and determination of our girls matched theirs throughout the game at many different stages.

Coming into the game it was documented through some English media that ‘The Irish’ maybe over confident coming up against England in their opening game, which was completely misconstrued. From the off the Irish were the underdog going into this match, world ranking and past results determined that tag, the belief was in each other and as a team that we could give a performance that we could be proud of as opposed to egotistically believing that we would defeat England.

“A performance to be proud of”. On many different levels I feel this statement is very true of tonight’s game, it was through no lack of passion, belief and work rate that the result went against us.

Ireland v England Pictures

27 – 0 is a score line that has been quoted as not reflecting the true course of the game, I’ll be interested to see the breakdown in match statistics and the actual possession that we had. On numerous occasions we had them on the back foot and defending  their try line but we just couldn’t convert in the end.

While there were elements to be proud of I know their are several areas of play that caused frustration, unforced errors, mis-tackles and penalty count. But we live to fight another day, these are all factors that can be worked on, the game will be assessed, positives and negatives taken away and certain elements brought into training in the hope to eradicate similar mistakes for the next battle against USA…

Watching on from the bench I couldn’t help but feel disappointed in not playing an active role in the game, you train to play and not getting pitch time is an obvious frustration, but hopefully I’ll get my chance and when I do I’ll take it!

I can honestly say the genuine support coming from the bench tonight to the starting 15 was immense, we couldn’t have been prouder every time a big hit was made, high ball was caught and possession stolen.

The experience as a whole was completely overwhelming , hearing the anthems, watching the fantastic support from the Irish fans lined around the field, it definitely didn’t feel like an away game, the banners, flags, mascots and chanting was astonishing!!

Every single player appreciated every single supporter out their tonight and the phenomenal support coming from across the water at home too!!

So one game down two to go in Pool B, the WRWC 2010 is underway and with the Irish in town anything can still happen…

I travelled to the game with a crew of girls from Young Munster RFC & we were so proud of the Irish performance, the final score certainly didn’t reflect the game and effort we witnessed by the Irish girls. Best of luck v USA, an opening game like that contest v England has to stand to us. Build on it girls & throw everything at them! We’ll all be rooting for you!! Come on Ireland!!
