United Rugby teamOne of Canada’s largest clubs, United Rugby Club, will be taking part in the inaugural Women’s 7’s tournament at Harlequins Rugby Club on 29th August.

United Rugby Club is based in Coquitlam, British Columbia. It was formed in 2005 with the joining of Pocomo RFC and Douglas RFC. Both clubs, formed in the 60’s and 70’s,  had success in their days, however by the early 2000′s they found themselves competing for players in the same catchment areas and decided to merge.

Tour organiser brings us up to date on the women’s game:

Douglas had established women’s rugby as early as 1974, but with very little competition the team sort of fizzled out. It was reborn permanently in 1991. Pocomo women’s rugby was started in 2000 (and I am a founding member of that side).

With the merger, United women’s rugby was the largest club in North America – and sent both a second division side and premier side to the provincial final in 2006.  Both team lost though L.  After a couple of years of rebuilding, we again sent two teams to provincial finals this year  – where our second division team won! And our premier side suffered a very tough loss.

To put it in context, there are 3 divisions of women’s rugby in BC, premier, first and second.  Right now we have a about 8-10 teams competing in each league.

Our club runs two women’s sides, (premier and second) and we also have a junior women’s team (for 18 years old and under). We are still the largest women’s club in our province, but I am not sure about the rest of the continent.

It’s certainly going to be a busy trip for the Canadian Tourists who have based the tour round the opening and closing days of the Women’s World Cup with matches in Edinburgh, Belfast and Dublin in between.

Their tour schedule is as follows:

Aug 20             Surrey – WWC Day 1

Aug 21             Manchester

Aug 22             Edinburgh

Aug 24             Glasgow

Aug 28             Belfast – Quins 7’s

Aug 31             Dublin

Sept 3              Bath

Sept 4              Twickenham Stoop WWC Finals

Sept 7              Depart for Canada

This is the second Canadian ladies side in the Provence in the last few months with the Dartmouth Pig Dogs putting up a strong showing on and off the field in matches against Carrick and Combined Universities. Denise is confident that United Rugby will be able to match their compatriots;

All I should say is that we take our rugby seriously, and we take our after match socializing seriously, and if anyone wants to hear some stories they will have to come see us in person at the Belfast tournament (and have a beer or two with us at the toga party after!)
